Akkineni Nageswara Rao, affectionately known as ANR, stands as a foundational pillar of Telugu cinema. His journey from the humble stages of rural theater to becoming a “Nava Rasa” polymath is a masterclass in dedication and artistic evolution. To understand his long innings is to understand the evolution of the Telugu film industry itself.
Humble Beginnings and the Stage
Born in Venkataratnapuram, ANR’s journey began not in front of a camera, but on the theater stage. Interestingly, in his early years, he often played female roles with such conviction that he gained immediate recognition, a testament to the versatility that would define his later career.
The Transition to Celluloid

His film debut in Dharmapatni (1941) was a modest start, but it wasn’t long before his expressive eyes and distinct dialogue delivery caught the attention of major producers. By the late 1940s, he was already established as a lead actor.
Mastering the Folklore Genre
Before he became the “King of Romance,” ANR dominated the folklore and fantasy genre. Films like Keelu Gurram and Balaraju made him a household name, proving he could handle the physical demands and larger-than-life personas of mythological and folk heroes.
Redefining the Social Drama

While his contemporary N.T. Rama Rao became the face of mythological deities, ANR pivoted toward social dramas. He became the voice of the common man, tackling issues of caste, poverty, and family values in films like Samsaram and Devadasu.
The Tragic Hero and “Devadasu”
No discussion of ANR is complete without Devadasu (1953). His portrayal of the self-destructive lover set a gold standard that remains unsurpassed. He didn’t just act the role; he inhabited the despair, making the character synonymous with his own identity for decades.
Confined to the Craft

Unlike many of his peers who transitioned into the turbulent waters of politics, ANR famously confined himself to films. He believed his contribution to society was best served through the arts. This singular focus allowed him to refine his craft and maintain a professional longevity that is rare in any film industry globally.
Challenging Time: The “Student” at Sixty
One of the most remarkable aspects of his career was his ability to defy age. In the late 1970s and 80s, even as he approached sixty and seventy years of age, ANR continued to play youthful, energetic roles—including a college student in films like College Bullodu. His disciplined lifestyle and makeup techniques allowed him to pull off these roles with a charm that the audience happily embraced.
The Romantic Icon
ANR earned the title of “Romantic King” through his poetic expressions and soft-spoken demeanor. He brought a certain sophistication to romance on screen, moving away from theatricality toward a more nuanced, “natural” style of acting.
Top Ten Landmark Films

ANR’s filmography is vast, but these ten films represent the heartbeat of his career:
- Devadasu: The definitive tragic romance.
- Prem Nagar: A blockbuster that redefined the “rich man-poor girl” trope with high emotional stakes.
- Mayabazar: His iconic portrayal of Abhimanyu.
- Batasari: A nuanced take on unrequited love and duty.
- Tenali Ramakrishna: Showcasing his impeccable comic timing and wit.
- Gundamma Katha: A classic ensemble comedy showing his versatility.
- Sudigundalu: A socially conscious film that won a National Award.
- Megha Sandesham: A lyrical masterpiece directed by Dasari Narayana Rao.
- Doctor Chakravarthy: Highlighting his ability to lead complex family dramas.
- Manam: A fitting, poetic conclusion to a legendary life.
The Prem Nagar Phenomenon Prem Nagar (1971) was a turning point. Playing a wealthy, alcoholic man who finds redemption through love, ANR displayed a range of emotions—from arrogance to vulnerability—that cemented his status as a superstar who could carry a film purely on performance.
The Grand Finale: ‘Manam’
ANR’s final film, Manam (2014), was a historical moment for Indian cinema. Acting alongside his son Nagarjuna and grandson Naga Chaitanya, his performance was effortless. Despite his failing health during production, his screen presence was luminous, bridging three generations of the Akkineni family in a story about eternal love and reincarnation.
A Legacy of Professionalism
ANR didn’t just act; he built. By establishing Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, he helped shift the Telugu film industry from Chennai to Telangana, creating an infrastructure for future generations. His seven-decade “innings” ended not with a fade-out, but with a standing ovation from millions of fans who saw him not just as an actor, but as a cultural institution.
