The Fateful Bus Stop Encounter
After completing his B.A. degree, young Haranath was waiting at the Vanimahal bus stop in Madras, on his way to join pilot training. Ace actor-director Mukkamala Krishna Murthy spotted the handsome youth, instantly recognized his hero material, and cast him as the lead in Rushyasrunga. Though signed for Rushyasrunga first, his second film, Maa Inti Mahalakshmi (1959), released first. This marked a historical milestone—it was the very first feature film produced at Saradhi Studios in Hyderabad, the future heartland of Tollywood.

Long before the era of Sobhan Babu and Krishna, Telugu cinema had a prince charming whose striking handsome looks, serene smile, and dignified charm earned him the enduring title “Andala Natudu”. Born on September 2, 1936, in Raparthi village near Pithapuram in East Godavari district, Buddharaju Venkata Appala Harnath Raju was drawn to the arts early in life. Haranath successfully navigated the transition from the black-and-white golden era to the color era over a 25-year career spanning 167 films across multiple languages, including 117 in Telugu.
