Journalism and Literary Foundation

Rao’s deep understanding of narrative structure and audience pulse stemmed from his early academic and literary background. He graduated with a B.A. from Noble College in Machilipatnam. He began his career as a cinema journalist for Krishna Patrika. This stint allowed him to analyze cinema critically before creating it. His literary flair later translated into songwriting, as he penned memorable lyrics for films like Oka Roju Raju and Mangalasutram.

Screenwriting and Narrative Adaptation

Rao was a master adapter, capable of taking complex Sanskrit texts, historical archives, or Western literature and shaping them into commercially viable, culturally rooted screenplays. He worked closely as an associate director and screenwriter alongside the legendary K.V. Reddy. His screenplay credit for Gunasundari Katha (1949)—which brilliantly adapted Shakespeare’s King Lear into an entertaining Indian folklore fantasy—showcased his elite structural writing skills long before he took the director’s chair.
