Part III:
Politically, Telangana has entered a brand-new epoch. The narrative of the “Telangana sentiment”—which allowed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS, later BRS) to dominate the political sphere for nearly a decade—has lost its exclusive grip on the electorate.
The Rise of Welfarism vs. The Debt Trap
The current political discourse has shifted from achieving the state to surviving its financial consequences. The state’s economy faces a classic structural challenge: funding aggressive, competitive welfarism while managing a mounting debt burden.
| Era / Factor | The 2014 Vision | The Present Reality |
| Primary Political Driver | Regional Identity & Self-Rule | Welfare Delivery & Employment |
| Key Irrigation Model | Gravity canals & local tank restoration | High-cost, power-intensive Lift Irrigation |
| Fiscal Status | Revenue Surplus State | High Debt-to-GSDP ratio driven by market borrowings |
The political battle lines are no longer drawn against an “external Andhra ruler.” Instead, they are fought internally over the delivery of cash-transfer schemes, farmer investment support, crop loan waivers, and government job recruitments. The youth, who were the driving force of the statehood agitation, now focus their frustration on the state’s processing of public service commissions and the challenges of local unemployment.
A Mature Federal Equation
The “prolonged struggle” Madabhushi Sridhar wrote about achieved its primary goal: a distinct, proud Telangana identity is securely established. However, the subsequent years have shown that a new state does not automatically erase old problems. It merely reconfigures them.
The ongoing disputes over water, state assets, and public money show that the fates of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh remain deeply connected. For both states to thrive, the political leadership must move past the grievances of the bifurcation era and establish a mature, cooperative federal partnership.
