Former Telangana Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar has strongly criticized the current Congress government, accusing its ministers of trying to steal credit for the Sita Rama Project, which was almost entirely built during the BRS regime. In a press statement on Thursday, the BRS leader stated that Congress ministers are spreading false propaganda against the previous KCR administration simply because they have no major funding or development work of their own to show for the project. He remarked that trying to pass off BRS’s achievements as their own is a clear attempt to deceive the public, who are well aware of the facts.
Over ₹9,000 Crore Spent and 90% Work Completed During BRS Regime
Highlighting the extensive work done under the leadership of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), Puvvada explained that the BRS government spent approximately ₹9,000 crores on the project. This massive effort included constructing over 100 kilometers of main canals, building pump houses, laying pipelines, setting up power transmission systems, and installing high-capacity modern motors. He pointed out that the BRS government successfully resolved highly complex hurdles—such as land acquisition, forest clearance, and environmental approvals—to complete 90% of the project’s construction.
From YSR-Era Neglect to KCR’s Vision for Khammam Farmers
The former minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar also recalled the project’s troubled history under the earlier Congress regime of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. He alleged that the original Indira Sagar and Rajiv Sagar projects were ruined by corruption, with the then-government turning the ‘Jalayagnam‘ initiative into a corrupt scheme to loot thousands of crores through mobilization advances. Puvvada asserted that it was KCR who rescued these abandoned projects, redesigned them as the Sita Rama Project, and gave them new life to secure irrigation for 10 lakh acres, recharge groundwater, and boost the rural economy of the undivided Khammam district.
