Senior journalist and political analyst K. Ramachandra Murthy has announced the formation of the ‘Forum for Constitutional Democracy’, an initiative aimed at safeguarding the core values of the Indian Constitution, promoting democratic principles, and defending fundamental rights. Speaking at the launch, Murthy emphasized that the Indian Constitution is currently facing unprecedented challenges. He highlighted that the democratic institutions, freedom of expression, and secular principles—the foundational pillars of the nation—are increasingly coming under strain.
Objectives of the Forum
Protecting Democratic Values: Working actively to uphold secularism, freedom of speech, and the independence of democratic institutions.
Raising Public Awareness: Educating citizens, particularly the youth, about their constitutional rights, duties, and the importance of active participation in a democracy.
Fostering Open Dialogue: Creating a collaborative platform for journalists, intellectuals, legal experts, social activists, and concerned citizens to deliberate on issues affecting the country’s socio-political fabric.
Holding Governance Accountable: Acting as a constructive watchdog to ensure government policies and actions align with the spirit and text of the Constitution.
Dr. Murthy noted that protecting the Constitution is not the sole responsibility of the judiciary or political parties, but a collective duty of every citizen. The Forum plans to organize seminars, public discussions, and awareness campaigns across regions to strengthen grass-roots awareness and drive active civic engagement.
