Plot Summary

The story begins with Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan), a sensitive poet, and the beautiful college girl Pooja (Rakhee Gulzar), who are deeply in love. Amit immortalizes his affection for Pooja in his poems, including the famous “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein.” However, their love is tragically cut short when Pooja’s parents arrange her marriage to the wealthy Vijay Kapoor (Shashi Kapoor). A heartbroken Amit marries Anjali (Waheeda Rehman), a kind woman who also carries the memory of a past love.
Years later, Pooja and Vijay have a son, Vicky (Rishi Kapoor). Another important character is Pinky (Neetu Singh), who was adopted by Dr. R. P. Kapoor (Parishit Sahani) and his wife. Pinky and Vicky meet in college and fall in love, determined to marry. Their plans face initial opposition from Pooja due to Pinky’s adopted status. The central emotional conflict arises when Pinky discovers she is not the biological daughter of the Kapoors. It is eventually revealed that her birth mother is Anjali (Amit’s wife), who had Pinky before her marriage to Amit.

The revelation forces a reunion between the estranged former lovers, Amit and Pooja. While they recall their past, they acknowledge their separate, peaceful lives. Vijay discovers the truth about his wife’s past love but trusts her completely. Pinky reunites with her mother Anjali, Vicky and Pinky marry, and Amit develops a deeper, more loving understanding of Anjali’s pain. The film concludes with both families united, all misunderstandings cleared, and the primary characters strengthening their current relationships by honestly confronting their past.

Kabhi Kabhie basked as a hit with its songs and Khayyams music.
The twisted romances and jinxed marriages never appealed to the viewers of the era,
but melodies and boisterous Rishi Kapoor Neetu Singh romance made waves. Acting performances were so so barring the brief expressions of Amitabh Bachchan singing Mein har ek pal ka shaayar hoon ..
