- Violent Assault on newly married couple
The 1978 Hindi film Ghar, produced by N. N. Sippy and directed by Manik Chatterjee, explores the devastating impact of a violent assault on a newly married couple and their subsequent, difficult journey toward emotional healing and the restoration of their conjugal life. The story centers on the psychological trauma and guilt that threaten to tear apart the relationship between the victims, ultimately highlighting the power of love, patience, and mutual support in overcoming a life-shattering tragedy.
Unexpected Cyclone in Newly married couple
The film stars Vinod Mehra as Vikas and Rekha as Aarti, a happily married couple who begin their new life in a small rented home in Mumbai. Their domestic bliss is shattered one night when, while returning home after watching a movie, Vikas is attacked by a group of men, and Aarti is brutally assaulted. The trauma resulting from the attack and assault deeply scarred both Vikas and Aarti, manifesting in profound psychological distress that deprived them of rest. For Aarti (Rekha): The nights were likely terrifying, plagued by flashbacks of the assault, nightmares, and intense anxiety. Sleep became impossible as her mind replayed the traumatic event, leaving her in a constant state of fear and hyper-vigilance, making her unable to feel safe even in her own home.

For Vikas (Vinod Mehra): His sleeplessness stemmed from crushing guilt and self-recrimination. He would likely lie awake, tormented by the feeling that he had failed to protect his wife. The emotional toll of watching Aarti suffer, combined with his own feelings of helplessness, created a cycle of distress and insomnia.
Emotional Disturbance to Aarti
The incident leaves Aarti emotionally disturbed and consumed by fear and trauma. Vikas is equally tormented, feeling immense guilt for his inability to protect his wife. This crisis severely disrupts their married life. With time, love, and emotional support from Vikas, Aarti slowly begins to recover her health and peace of mind. The couple eventually finds their way back to normalcy, concluding the film on a note of enduring commitment.
RD Burman Music was mega success
Manik Chatterjee’s direction and the film’s overall picturization were widely praised for their sensitivity and realism. A vital component of the film’s success was the super hit musicomposed by R. D. Burman, featuring popular songs such as “Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Na” (Sung by Lata Mangeshkar) “Aaj Kal Paon Zamee Par” (Sung by Lata Mangeshkar) “Aap Ke Aankhon mein Kuch Meheke Hue” (Sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar). Rekha delivered an extremely well-received performance in the demanding role of Aarti.

Ok. It’s a family oriented movie.
Rape in private circumstances and that in presence of family, carry different meaning and effect.
The utter state of susceptibility and helpless where our recourse to law is pathetic compels the victims into depression and self loathing. Very difficult to regain normalcy.
Songs and story are good but viewing is difficult.
