The political landscape of India has undergone a massive transformation on Monday, May 4, 2026, as the results for the five-state assembly elections were declared. The day was marked by the fall of long-standing fortresses and the rise of a new political superstar in the South. From the shores of Bengal to the temples of Tamil Nadu, the voters have delivered a mandate that will be remembered for years to come.
End of an Era in Bengal

In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved what was once thought impossible by ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule with a thumping majority. The BJP swept the state, winning nearly 200 seats and leaving the Trinamool Congress (TMC) far behind. The biggest shock came from Bhabanipur, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was defeated by her former aide-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing supporters at the BJP headquarters, called it a victory for “development over fear,” promising to implement the Seventh Pay Commission and central welfare schemes immediately.
Vijay’s Box Office Hit in Politics

In Tamil Nadu, the political script was rewritten by actor-turned-politician Vijay. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), stunned the nation by emerging as the single largest party on its debut. TVK won over 100 seats, completely disrupting the traditional battle between the DMK and AIADMK. In a historic upset, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lost his own seat in Kolathur to a TVK candidate. While Vijay’s party fell slightly short of the majority mark, it has become the most powerful force in the state, signaling a decisive shift away from old-school Dravidian politics.
Kerala’s Classic Comeback

The waves of change also reached Kerala, where the Congress-led UDF successfully stopped the Left’s dream of a third term. The UDF won 102 seats, riding on a strong anti-incumbency wave.
Saffron Surge in the East

In Assam, however, it was a story of continuity as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP-led NDA to a historic third consecutive victory with a massive lead. Finally, in Puducherry, the NDA alliance retained its hold, winning 18 out of 30 seats. Altogether, these results indicate a “New India” where voters are rewarding strong performance and are equally ready to embrace fresh leadership.
