Ardh Satya (1983) is a landmark Indian crime-drama film directed by Govind Nihalani and is considered a masterpiece of parallel cinema. The screenplay, written by Vijay Tendulkar, is based on the short story by D. A. Panvalkar, offering a gritty, realistic look at the corruption and political interference within the police system.
Key Cast and Crew
The film featured an acclaimed ensemble cast: Om Puri as Anant Velankar (Protagonist, Sub-Inspector of Police)-Amrish Puri as Inspector Velankar (Anant’s Father)-Smita Patil as Jyotsna Gokhale (Anant’s Love Interest)-Sadashiv Amrapurkar as Rama Shetty (Antagonist, Gangster-Politician) Naseeruddin Shah (in a supporting role).

Plot Summary
The story centers on Sub-Inspector Anant Velankar (Om Puri), a young, idealistic, and volatile police officer whose career path was influenced by his father, a veteran Inspector (Amrish Puri). Anant struggles to maintain his integrity against the pervasive corruption and political manipulation that hamstring law enforcement. His father constantly advises him to be a “diplomat” rather than an aggressive crusader.
Anant’s frustration peaks when he is forced to deal with the powerful gangster-politician Rama Shetty (Sadashiv Amrapurkar). Anant’s uncompromising nature leads him to clash with Rama Shetty’s men, even publicly assaulting the politician’s son for his high-handed behavior. Throughout his turmoil, he finds emotional solace in his relationship with Jyotsna Gokhale (Smita Patil), an educated, sensitive woman.
The central conflict escalates following a custodial death during Anant’s interrogation of a suspect, placing him in severe professional jeopardy. Advised by a colleague, he grudgingly seeks the help of the very man he despises, Rama Shetty, to escape the consequences. Shetty agrees to help, but his price is not money; he demands Anant’s silent complicity essentially, to become his “pet dog.”
Driven to the edge by this ultimate compromise, Anant’s moral conscience shatters his self-control. Unable to tolerate the complete surrender of his professional integrity, Anant murders Rama Shetty, bringing the film to its tragic and uncompromising conclusion.
Awards and Legacy
Ardh Satya was a major critical success and received significant accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Om Puri was notably awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for his raw and powerful portrayal of the conflicted Anant Velankar. The film remains a classic for its unflinching examination of the state of justice and the inevitable moral compromise faced by an honest man within a corrupt system.

This is a good one. Parallel cinema which was a surprise commercial hit. In the original script Om puri was supposed to commit suicide but the director changed it as it was depressing. Wise choice as the movie would have likely flopped.
Excellent Sir. Thank You Very Much. Your comment give’s me the boost. Thank You once again.
Very nice sir
I didn’t watch this movie. Beautifully narrated the story. You are very talented annayya.
Thank You Aruna.
I don’t member I watched this film. Those days such films weren’t commercial hits though, were only available with entertainment tax free pass gifted to my father usually. so I was in lookout to watch the film and it went on without sparing time for that. The narration of the story here once again enlight me to view it now with lot more enthusiasm. Thank you for bringing up reviews of all classicals of yester years that are meant to be noteworthy.
Thank You.
I have heard a great deal about this movie. I have seen Govind Nihalani’s other work, a series made for Doordarshan. Om Puri was the protagonist in that. Ardh Satya became a commercial hit because of its powerful narration and great performances by the great actors! We do not see such a mix of movies in today’s filmmaking: stories from the real world that put characters in a difficult position and challenge moral and ethical conflicts. The review here showcases the movie really well.
Thank You Bindu.
A very different angry young man shown by Om Puri. It was considered a new version of Zanjeer sans the glamour. Smita
Patil a fresher in filmdom made her presence felt. The dialogues were loud but left their mark for the viewers.
Very rightly said Sir. Thank You Very Much For Your Support. Keep Giving Your Comments.
A thoughtful and powerful review — it beautifully captures the depth of Ardh Satya and its lasting impact on Indian cinema. The way it highlights Om Puri’s performance and the film’s moral conflict is truly commendable. Insightful and well-written!
I haven’t watched the movie but your review made it clear that I should watch the movie
I saw the film during my college days. I felt the movie showed our life in the society. Particularly the insecurity a normal man faced. The cast performed well. I liked the movie
