- The Iconic Villain – Rao Gopala Rao
- Dialogues in the Godavari Telugu dialect have become popular
Mutyalamuggu, which released November 14, 1975, completed golden jubilee this month. The beautiful song of the film written by Arudra is …
It wonderfully depict the sacred ritual of housewives applying turmeric powder on their faces, the creation of a healthy atmosphere in their homes, the performance of pooja to the holy cow and Tulasi plant, and the deep love between the couple. Those who are familiar with the song are often eager to hear or watch the entire performance.
Legacy and Impact
Mutyalamuggu was a blockbuster hit and went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. The film’s enduring popularity, even decades later, lies in its successful blend of tradition and modernity, its strong moral core, and the unforgettable performances, especially Rao Gopal Rao’s career-defining turn. It remains a classic of Telugu cinema, a perfect synergy of Bapu’s visuals (“Bapu Bomma”) and Ramana’s writing (“Ramana Maata”).

Bapu’s Direction -Visual Poetry- Natural Beauty
Mutyalamuggu (A Muggu of Pearls), is a testament to the enduring power of classic Indian storytelling fused with his unique directorial vision. Co-written by his lifelong collaborator, Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, the film is a brilliant, contemporary adaptation of the Uttara Ramayana, subtly yet powerfully translating the epic’s themes of virtue, separation, and reunion into a modern Andhra setting. Bapu, originally a celebrated cartoonist and artist, brought an instantly recognizable aesthetic to his filmmaking. His direction in Mutyalamuggu is marked by a leisurely, non-melodramatic narrative style, which was a refreshing contrast to the often over-the-top dramatics of the era.
Subtle Storytelling: The film is visually poetic, showcasing the natural beauty and nativity of the Telugu people and the Godavari region. Cinematographer Ishan Arya’s work, which earned a National Film Award, beautifully frames the rural estate and the picturesque surroundings. The scenes are often composed like Bapu’s own minimalist and evocative paintings. A key strength of Bapu’s direction is the subtlety in handling intense emotional scenes. For instance, the moment the protagonist, Sreedhar, asks his pregnant wife Laxmi to leave is depicted with restraint, avoiding excessive melodrama, which makes the emotional impact deeper and more realistic.
Mythological Echoes-Mullapudi Writing and Characterization
Bapu, a devotee of Shri Rama, masterfully weaves the Ramayana into the narrative. Laxmi’s separation and the subsequent raising of her twin children by a kindly priest clearly mirror Sita’s exile and the birth of Lava and Kusha, with a symbolic monkey often representing Hanuman’s guiding spirit. The film’s soul rests in Mullapudi Venkata Ramana’s sharp, yet deeply rooted, writing. His dialogues are legendary, particularly those delivered by the villain. The character of the Contractor, brilliantly played by Rao Gopal Rao, is arguably the most memorable element of the film. Ramana’s dialogues for him—often laced with dark humor and the distinct East Godavari accent are celebrated and quoted even today. Lines like “Choodu Secretary, akasam erra gaa vundi, ante ekkado murder ayyindi ani” (Look, Secretary, the sky is red, which means a murder has taken place somewhere) instantly became part of Telugu popular culture. The villain’s larger-than-life presence and unique mannerisms dominate the screen.
Strong Female Protagonist
Laxmi, portrayed by Sangeeta, is a strong, dignified woman. She is not a helpless figure of misery. When her father-in-law requests her return, she refuses, stating that reconciliation must come from her husband’s genuine acceptance of his mistake, highlighting Bapu-Ramana’s focus on grounded, self-respecting female characters.

There are a few characters played by our Telugu actors that have become iconic in the history of Telugu cinema! Late Sri Rao Gopala Rao’s character in Mutyala Muggu, for example. His iconic ‘segatry’ has become almost immortal! It was a Bapu movie that showcased women as beautiful Telugu ‘ammayi’. All the heroines of his movies are beauty personified, inside and out! They are beautiful, command respect, are resilient, and exude strength in silence! Where do you find that now? My all-time favorite director! When we are talking about Bapu, it is a sin not to talk about Ramana, the soul of Bapu’s movies! The eternally great duo, Bapu-Ramana.
The film Muthyala muggu was wonderful and the dialogues of Rao gopala rao was amazing. This film runs slowly, but it was message oriented. Thanks for the beautiful narration on this film.
Mutyalamuggu is one of my favorite Telugu movie. Beautifully written by mullapudi, directed by Bapu. Masterpiece movie. Mutyamanta pasupu song was super hit song sung by P. Susheela and written by Arudra is one of the best Telugu songs .
It’s a beautiful picture with a good story in Baapu direction with good music by Late K. V. Mahadevan and with full of Telugu culture. Ultimate it is. Flawless. Watching this movie one can relieve from tensions and feel relaxed. Excellent performance by Rao Gopala Rao and Sangeeta and the best direction by Baapu. Excellent music by late K. V. Mahadevan.
It was the era of villain’s dialogue delivery which stole the show.
One good aspect shown is that everyone has the weak points even the villain which has helped restore the good over Evil dominates the story at climax.
Humour is the forte for the movie
Raogopalrao until this picture done may not be much popular to an ordinary audience. Ofcourse, in this film he is received well by many of the telugu ppl. So too his action was at acme. Bapu direction just flawless. The artistic aptitude( telugu inti adapadachu) sinked well in this movie. Songs too are nice.
