Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a new direction for global development at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which began on Saturday in Johannesburg, South Africa. Speaking at the inaugural session focused on ‘Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth,’ the Prime Minister stressed the need to re-examine existing global development standards to achieve growth that is both inclusive and sustainable. He felt that since the African continent was hosting the G20 Summit for the first time, it was the perfect moment to redefine development. Modi also highlighted that India’s ancient civilisational values, especially the concept of Integral Humanism, can show a path forward for the world. Following his address, he shared the key highlights of his speech on the ‘X’ platform.
During his address to the world leaders, PM Modi put forth four key, innovative proposals for global development, emphasising a shift in focus towards inclusive and sustainable growth.

G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository
The first major proposal was the establishment of a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository. The Prime Minister explained that this repository would help preserve traditional knowledge and practices that are environmentally friendly and culturally rich, ensuring this collective wisdom is passed on to future generations. He suggested that India’s existing knowledge systems could form the basis for this global platform.
Empowering Africa – The G20-Africa Skills Initiative
The second important proposal was the G20 – Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, aimed at boosting development across the African continent. Under this ambitious programme, the collective goal of G20 nations would be to train one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade, significantly enhancing local skills and capacity. Modi clearly stated that the progress of Africa is crucial for global progress.
Tackling the Drug-Terror Nexus
Additionally, PM Modi proposed a coordinated effort to counter the growing connection between drugs and terror. Expressing deep concern over the spread of dangerous synthetic drugs like Fentanyl, he called for a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus. The Prime Minister urged G20 countries to work together to curb illegal drug trafficking and block the illicit financial flows that fund terrorism.
Establishing a Global Healthcare Response Team
Finally, he suggested the formation of a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team. This initiative would involve creating teams of trained medical experts from G20 nations who would be ready for rapid deployment during health emergencies or natural disasters, thereby strengthening the collective global response capacity.
