Prakash Mehra’s 1978 blockbuster, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (The Conqueror of Destiny), is a quintessential Bollywood melodrama centered on profound sacrifice. This incident, brought to the notice of Kaamna’s father (Dr. Shriram Lagoo), leads Kaamna’s family to relocate, leaving Sikandar with a broken heart and an undeserved reputation as a thief in Kaamna’s mind.

A Love Triangle and Noble Sacrifice

Years later, their fortunes are reversed. Sikandar is rich and influential, while Kaamna’s family faces poverty and her father’s business is failing. Kaamna now runs music classes to support her household. Despite Kaamna’s persistent hatred stemming from the childhood incident, Sikandar remains good-hearted. He anonymously helps the family, particularly with Kaamna father’s medical expenses, which leads her father to recognize Sikandar’s nobility. Sikandar also forms an unbreakable bond with Vishal (Vinod Khanna), an uneducated orphan he takes under his wing, treating him like a younger brother and funding his education. Complications arise when both Sikandar and Vishal fall in love with Kaamna.

Uneducated himself, Sikandar asks Vishal to write a love letter to Kaamna on his behalf. Kaamna recognizes Vishal’s handwriting and believes the letter is from him, a sentiment she gladly reciprocates as she has fallen in love with Vishal. The subsequent revelation that Kaamna and Vishal are in love with each other is an immensely emotional moment for Sikandar. True to his noble character, he chooses to sacrifice his own love for the happiness of his friend and the woman he loves.

The Tragic Climax

The film reaches its tragic climax involving Zohra Bai (Rekha), a courtesan deeply devoted to Sikandar, and Dilawar (Amjad Khan), who misunderstands the nature of the relationship between Sikandar and Zohra Bai. Misguidedly believing Sikandar has wronged Zohra, Dilawar initiates a fatal confrontation, in which Sikandar heroically dies, completing his destiny as a great lover who sacrifices everything for others.
