The court judgment is a sharp blow to the Telugu Desam Party
CPI State Secretary Gujjula Eswaraiah Demands Fair Elections
Police Brutality Spoils Local Body Elections
CPI State Secretary Gujjula Eswaraiah demanded the State Election Commission and DGP to follow the SC judgment without fail and conduct peaceful elections. He said that the verdict is a big blow to the ruling government in Andhra Pradesh. In a statement, he stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to instill faith in the democratic process and demanded immediate measures to ensure smooth and peaceful elections. There are reports that the police themselves stood as spectators at some places and safeguarded TD workers at more places.
Implementation of Online Nominations
Taking note of recent violence and attacks, he urged authorities to accept nominations online so candidates can file without fear or inconvenience. He welcomed the Supreme Court’s direction to re-receive nominations in 19 locations and to provide adequate security to all contesting candidates.
Termed the continuous obstruction, intimidation, and forced withdrawal of candidates—including those from Communist parties—as deeply anti-democratic. Questioned whether opposition and independent candidates no longer have the basic right to contest in elections.
Allegations Against the Administration and Police
Criticized the unholy nexus between the police, the ruling alliance (Chandrababu Naidu’s alliance), and the Election Commission, stating that democracy is being sacrificed for their power hunger. Alleged that police personnel themselves were blocking opposition candidates and removing contesting candidates from polling booths. Expressed concern that complaints filed with the police regarding electoral malpractices were being completely ignored. “It is surprised that the police and polling staff acted as mere spectators while TD goons entering to the poll offices and torn the nomination papers”, he said.
Protecting Democratic Rights and Accountability
Stated that the core responsibility of the Election Commission is not just holding elections, but ensuring they are conducted freely and impartially. He stressed that the police should implement the following for fair elections. 1: Emphasized that no authority has the right to set aside Supreme Court rulings, constitutional provisions, or election rules. 2: Called for an impartial inquiry and strict action against those who violated the law. 3: Urged the public to question the failures of the administration and step forward to protect democracy.
