- A relentless struggle for issues from the streets to Delhi
- N.S. Rao addresses the WJI Khammam preparatory meeting
- Khammam District “Ad-hoc” Committee elected unanimously
Telangana State Secretary of the Working Journalists of India (WJI), N.S. Rao, stated that WJI (affiliated with BMS) is the only union consistently fighting for the welfare, rights, and professional dignity of journalists across India. Speaking as the chief guest at the WJI Khammam district preparatory meeting held on Sunday at the Ramalayam Function Hall, he emphasized that the union plays a vital role in fostering a nationalist outlook and democratic values within journalism. He noted that the organization not only encourages professionals by presenting “Best Journalist” awards but also maintains an uncompromising struggle to resolve their grievances.

The meeting was presided over by senior journalist M.A. Ansar Pasha. During his address, N.S. Rao highlighted that the credit for getting digital media personnel recognized as “working journalists” belongs solely to their union. He explained that it was only after WJI’s persistent protests and formal requests that the Central Government officially granted this recognition to those working for news websites. Additionally, he mentioned that the WJI has already submitted a formal request to the Central Government to restore railway travel passes for journalists.

The State Secretary Rao also recalled the union’s efforts during the pandemic, where they fought to have media personnel recognized as frontline warriors and ensured financial aid for the families of deceased journalists. He called for the implementation of pension schemes, health insurance, and the Majithia Wage Board recommendations. Regarding local issues, he urged the state government to resolve the long-pending journalist housing site issue immediately without using court verdicts as an excuse for further delay.

Addressing the modern challenges of the industry, N.S. Rao pointed out that corporate dominance and contract-based hiring have created job insecurity. To counter this, WJI is planning skill development programs to help journalists adapt to changing times. He described WJI as a transparent, democratic national family with a strong network across all states that acts as a bridge between journalists, managements, and the government.
