Shree Charani, a Telugu cricketer, is on the top of the world after breaking speedster Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s long –standing record of 37 T20I wickets set in 2022. She has also overcome the marks set by Arshdeep Singh (36 in 2024) and Poonam Yadav’s previous women’s record of 35 wickets in 2018. The Indian left arm spinner etched her name into cricket folklore by taking 39 wickets so far in 2026 setting a new record. And it is only September now. She has three months to go to complete 2026 in which time she can take more wickets and set a new record which will be difficult to beat. She reached the historic milestone during the Indian women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 final against Sri Lanka at international Cricket Stadium in Dubai on Sunday night.

Shree Charani finished the Women Asia Cup 2026 final with exceptional figures of 4 for 20 in four overs allotted to her against Sri Lanka. The match-winning performance propelled her calendar tally to 39 T20I wickets in 2026 breaking the previous Indian records across both men’a and women’s cricket.
Born on 4 August 2004 in Erramalle village of Veerapanyuni Mandal in YSR Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, Nallapureddy Shree Charani started with athletics, badminton and Kho-Kho before settling for cricket. Her uncle has supported her in cricket. She failed to make a mark in India’s Under-19 World Cup squad. She, however, could impress the selectors at the Under-23 level following which she was picked at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 auction. After a bidding tussle between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, Shree Charani was bought by the latter for Rs. 55 lakh.
From Humble Beginnings to India’s Strike Weapon
Hailing from a humble family and growing up amidst poverty, Shree Charani rose to the level of a rising star of Indian women cricket. Her run up to bowl contains only a few steps but the ball takes a sharp turn making it difficult for the batter to connect. She does not put up any show and does not exhibit any emotions. She is cool and warm with her teammates. Her control over the ball and speed in the air is commendable. Her throws from the fielding are sharp and accurate reaching the wicket keeper without her having to move or run to catch the ball.
She picked up two wickets in the IPL debut against Royal Challengers, Bengaluru. Then she was given a chance to play for Delhi Capitals in the final of 2025 IPL where she took a couple of wickets but conceded a lot of runs. Her team was a runners-up. In the same year, at the age of 20, Shree Charani made her international debut in the limited overs format. In the first match of the season she played against England in Nottimgham and picket up four wickets in T20I. Since she was an athlet to begin with, she is a very sharp fielder and her bowling action is appreciated by critics. She has gained experience in Indian spin department and her captain Hermanpreet Kaur depends on her a lot for a breakthrough. She has been India’s strike weapon.
Dismantles Sri Lanka to Seal India’s Eighth Asia Cup Title
Just days before she reached the milestone, Shree Charani became the fastest Indian bowler across both genders to pick 50 career T20I wickets, reaching the mark in just 29 matches. She bettered the previous Indian record set by Kuldeep Yadav of getting 50 wickets in 30 overs. She is known for her consistency strangling top order batters and breaking partnerships during the middle overs. In the just concluded Asia Cup final of T20I in Dubai, Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma made a record-breaking opening stand of 124 runs. Defending such a big total, Charani dismantled Sri Lanka’s chase to win the match with a lead of 72 runs. By taking four crucial wickets, Charani helped Indian women to get their eighth Asia crown.
A Trailblazer’s Triumph
Shree Charani’s grit, determination and unwavering passion for cricket transformed her into a symbol of national prided. Her contribution for Indian team in winning the Women’s World Cup title is very much recognized by the selectors. She was the first cricketer from Andhra Pradesh to play in World Cup final. Her father Chandrasekhar Reddy, an employee in Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station at Proddutur in Kadapa district, encouraged his daughter in sports and games. The young orthodox left arm spinner entered the first-class cricket rather late in her 21st year. But within a span of one year she not only proved herself but also won laurels for her and her country. What began as a dream in a dusty playground of a small village has culminated in the glory of being the best bowler in the world.
It was former cricket selector MSK Prasad who told her to concentrate on cricket. But her father was more focused on seeing his daughter win medals in athletics. But he was convinced by Shree Charani’s uncle and there was no looking back for her. She has a long way to go. She is sure to make her name embedded in annals of cricket history of India.
