TWO MEDICAL FACULTY SELECTED FOR STATE-LEVEL BEST TEACHER AWARDS
Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, has earned yet another prestigious distinction, with two of its senior medical faculty members being selected for the State-Level Best Teacher Awards for the year 2026, announced by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Prof. Dr. Y. Mutheeswaraiah, Professor and Head, Department of General Surgery, and Prof. Dr. B. Manilal, Professor of Surgical Oncology, SVIMS, have been selected for the prestigious State-Level Best Teacher Awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to medical education, clinical services, academic excellence and mentorship of future generations of doctors.
The two distinguished faculty members will receive the awards on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on September 5, 2026, at Vijayawada, from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu, during the State-level Teachers’ Day celebrations. Congratulating both the awardees, Dr. Gudaru Jagadesh, Director & Vice-Chancellor, SVIMS, described the recognition as a proud moment not only for the two distinguished professors but for the entire SVIMS family.
“A great medical teacher does much more than impart knowledge. A teacher shapes the clinical judgement, professional ethics, compassion and sense of responsibility of generations of doctors. The selection of two distinguished faculty members from SVIMS for the State-Level Best Teacher Awards is a matter of immense pride for our institution. It is a recognition of their sustained commitment to teaching, patient care, research and mentorship, and also reflects the high standards of medical education being nurtured at SVIMS,” said Dr. Gudaru Jagadesh.
He further stated that such recognition would inspire all faculty members and young doctors of SVIMS to pursue excellence in teaching, clinical practice, research, innovation and compassionate patient care.
Over Two Decades of Excellence in Medical Education and Surgery
Prof. Dr. Y. Mutheeswaraiah joined the Department of General Surgery at SVIMS as an Assistant Professor on January 1, 2005. Through his sustained academic and clinical contributions, he rose through the ranks and was promoted as Professor in 2010. He has been serving as Head of the Department of General Surgery since 2012, contributing significantly to the growth of the department and the training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. He possesses extensive clinical and surgical expertise in the management of varicose veins, hernias, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, and breast diseases, among other areas of general surgery.
Dedicated Service in Surgical Oncology and Cancer Care
Prof. Dr. B. Manilal is presently serving as Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at SVIMS. He began his association with SVIMS in 2009 as a Senior Resident in Surgical Oncology. Through professional excellence, dedication and sustained academic contributions, he progressed as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor before assuming responsibilities as Professor in 2023. With more than 17 years of clinical experience in Oncology, Dr. Manilal has distinguished himself through his commitment to providing comprehensive and high-quality surgical care to cancer patients.
His approach to cancer care combines surgical expertise with compassion and sensitivity towards patients and their families. Alongside clinical services, he has been actively involved in the education and training of postgraduate students and young doctors, imparting knowledge and advanced surgical skills in the field of Surgical Oncology. He has also played an important role in the continued development of the Department of Surgical Oncology and in strengthening comprehensive cancer care services at SVIMS.
