History often has a fragile memory, and without dedicated storytellers, the pioneers who built the foundations of our modern entertainment industry risk fading into obscurity. One such towering figure is Paidi Jairaj, a son of Telangana who rose from the rural landscapes of Karimnagar to become one of the earliest action heroes of the Indian silver screen.
Bridging the magical transition from the silent era to the talkies, Jairaj’s life was a testament to the early courage of Indian artists. Today, thanks to the painstaking efforts of senior journalist and Karimnagar Film Society Chairman Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra, Jairaj’s extraordinary legacy has been rightfully restored to the public consciousness.
A Journey from Karimnagar to the Heart of Bollywood

Paidi Jairaj’s story is not just a biography; it is a chronicle of early Indian cinema’s adventurous spirit. Born in a village in Karimnagar, Telangana, Jairaj harbored dreams that were far larger than his surroundings. At a time when cinema was an entirely new and uncertain medium, he embarked on a daunting journey.
His pursuit of acting took him from his roots in Hyderabad to the studios of Pune, and ultimately to Mumbai—the beating heart of what would become Bollywood. Entering an industry that was still finding its voice, Jairaj brought with him an unmatched work ethic. He established himself as a disciplined artist, a dignified elder statesman of the industry, and above all, a fearless stunt performer. Long before high-tech CGI and safety harnesses, Jairaj was thrilling audiences as Indian cinema’s first true action hero, starring in hundreds of films across several decades.
The Ultimate Recognition

Jairaj’s immense contribution to the cinematic arts did not go unnoticed by the nation. In 1980, the Government of India honored him with the highest recognition in Indian cinema: the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Presented to him by the then-President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the award was not merely a recognition of an individual actor’s talent, but an acknowledgment of an entire era of Indian film history that he helped build.
The Documentary Mission of Ravichandra

Despite his monumental achievements, subsequent generations knew very little about Jairaj’s extraordinary journey. Driven by admiration and a deep sense of historical responsibility, film critic Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra embarked on a mission to uncover the scattered archival pieces of Jairaj’s life.
Ravichandra traveled extensively, tracking down senior film personalities, historians, and family members. He gathered memories, rare photographs, and archival film clips. This exhaustive research culminated in both a comprehensive book and an acclaimed documentary titled “The First Action Hero Paidi Jairaj.”
Bringing this documentary to life was a massive collaborative effort. Under Dr. Ravichandra’s visionary guidance, the project was executed by a dedicated technical crew:
Director: Kathi Chethan
Director of Photography (DOP): Gouni Thirupathi
Editor: Kumbham Uday
A Triumphant Tribute at the Gaddar Awards
The significance of this historical revival was recently celebrated by the Telangana State Government. “The First Action Hero Paidi Jairaj” was selected for the second-best documentary honor at the prestigious Telangana Gaddar Film Awards.
This recognition carries profound symbolic weight. Named after the revolutionary cultural icon Gaddar, who championed the history of the people and amplified forgotten voices, the award perfectly aligns with the documentary’s mission of resurrecting a forgotten cinematic pioneer.
It is a moment of immense pride for the Karimnagar Film Society, film journalists, and cinema lovers everywhere. Furthermore, it adds another prestigious accolade to Dr. Ponnam Ravichandra’s career, who was previously honored as the Best Film Critic at the 2024 Telangana Gaddar Film Awards.

Preserving the Dream
The life of Paidi Jairaj embodies perseverance, raw talent, and a spirit of adventure. Dr. Ravichandra’s work serves as a powerful reminder: history survives only when we consciously choose to remember it. By celebrating Jairaj, we are not just honoring a veteran actor; we are preserving the earliest dreams of Indian cinema itself.
