The Telangana Legislative Assembly has created history by unanimously passing the “Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026.” This significant legislation aims to protect elderly parents from neglect by ensuring financial support from their children. Under this new law, if an employee is found to be neglecting their parents, 15% of their gross salary will be deducted and paid directly to the parents for their sustenance and medical needs. Notably, this law is not limited to government staff; it applies to private sector employees and even elected public representatives, ensuring that no one is above the responsibility of caring for their elders.
While introducing the bill, Minister for SC, ST, and Elderly Welfare, Adluri Laxman Kumar, emphasized that the law is a response to the growing trend of children abandoning their parents in their old age. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy delivered an emotional speech in the House, describing the bill as a “historic step” toward restoring social and moral values. He expressed deep concern over how modern society often prioritizes material wealth over human relationships, leading to a tragic rise in elderly abandonment. The Chief Minister pointed out that while there are many laws to protect women and children, the existing legal framework for the elderly has often proven insufficient in providing real-time relief.

Chief Minister Reddy shared poignant examples to highlight the necessity of this law, citing the famous case of Raymond’s founder Vijaypat Singhania, who faced a crisis after transferring his wealth to his son. He also mentioned a personal account of a public representative who neglected his father during a cancer battle, arguing that society must hold such individuals accountable.
By including politicians and private employees under the bill’s ambit, the government aims to instill a sense of “fear and responsibility” in those who forget their roots. The CM concluded by stating that while a law cannot fix every emotional bond, it provides a much-needed safety net to ensure no parent in Telangana is left homeless or hungry in their final years.
