The central theme of the 1981 film Silsila, directed and produced by Yash Chopra, is the unpredictable continuation of life and love (“Silsila” literally meaning “continuation” or “chain”). It explores the emotional and moral fallout when an individual is forced by circumstance to abandon true love for a duty-bound marriage, and the subsequent guilt, pain, and ultimate realization that follow the continuation of a secret, extra-marital affair. The narrative delves into the conflict between passion and commitment, demonstrating how an unexpected tragedy can irrevocably alter one’s course, challenging societal expectations and personal desires.
Character Dynamics
The story centers on the lives of two brothers and the women they love. Shekhar Malhotra (Shashi Kapoor), an Air Force pilot, is set to marry Shobha (jaya Bachan), a woman deeply in love with him but fearful of the risks associated with his profession. Shekhar introduces Shobha to his younger brother, Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan), a passionate poet, and the two instantly connect, developing a deep, unspoken love.

The first major “unexpected” turn occurs when Shekhar dies in an air crash, witnessed by his pregnant fiancée, Shobha (Jaya Bachchan). Devastated and alone, Shobha challenges Amit to take responsibility for her future, prompting her famous question: “Will you marry me?” To save his deceased brother’s honor and rescue Shobha, Amit sacrifices his love for Chandini and marries Shobha, despite his true feelings. Heartbroken, Chandini also moves on, marrying the kind and caring Dr. V. K. Anand (Sanjeev Kumar).
The Continuation of the Affair
Despite their respective marriages, the emotional attachment between Amit and Chandini remains strong. The continuation of their love becomes a secret affair, as they start meeting each other. The film portrays the emotional toll this deception takes on all four individuals. Chandini lies to Dr. Anand, unable to sever her connection to Amit. Shobha gradually recognizes that Amit’s heart isn’t fully with her. Dr. Anand grows increasingly suspicious of Chandini’s emotional distance.

Resolution and Realization
Driven by their desire to be together, Amit decides to leave Shobha, and Chandini resolves to leave Dr. Anand. While driving away together to start a new life, the couple is involved in a severe car accident. Surviving the crash acts as a moment of profound realization for both Amit and Chandini. The brush with death makes them recognize the deep moral wrong they were committing and the pain they were inflicting on their spouses. They choose to end the affair, with Amit returning to Shobha and Chandini returning to Dr. Anand. The film concludes with Shobha giving birth to her late husband Shekhar’s child, symbolizing a return to duty and a new beginning.
Amitabh turns as Singer in the film
Silsila is also renowned for its soulful and iconic music, composed by the duo Shiv-Hari (Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hari Prasad Chaurasia). Popular songs from the film include Yeh Kaha Aa Gaye Hum (Lata Mangeshkar with Amitabh Bachchan), Dekha Ek Kwab Toh Silsile Hue (Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar), Rang Barse (Amitabh Bachchan), Neela Aasman Gaya (Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan – solo), Jo Tum Thodo Piya Mai Nahi Thodu Re (Lata Mangeshkar).
The film was celebrated for the dynamic performances of the star cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Jaya Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, and Sanjeev Kumar and Yash Chopra’s sensitive direction of a complex and controversial subject, leading to its status as a successful and influential film in Indian cinema.

It’s a film nicely directed by Yash Chopra in situations where unexpected to happen. It’s director Yash Chopra’s ability to picturise the film in such a way. And the great performances of Amitabh, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachhan and Rekha and soulful music by Shiv-Hari made film success.
Probably the first film to depart from the love triangle scenario to the square/Pentagon scenario. Both of the romantic couple have additional partners and are confused which to choose.
