Scheme Summary
Dr. Amarnath Gill (Sanjeev Kumar), a successful physician, returns to the scenic town of Darjeeling after many years. His return triggers memories of a passionate love affair with a local woman, Chanda (Sharmila Tagore), from his student days. That relationship ended when he left for further studies, leaving Chanda pregnant. Upon his return, Dr. Gill is devastated to learn the tragic fate of his former lover. Chanda was abandoned and died, and their daughter, Kajli (also played by Sharmila Tagore), grew up in heartbreaking circumstances, becoming a prostitute.

Overwhelmed by guilt and sorrow, Dr. Gill resolves to atone for his past by rescuing and reforming Kajli. He visits the brothel and negotiates for her permanent release, paying whatever price is demanded. Initially, the brothel’s proprietor misunderstands his intent and offers another girl, but Dr. Gill insists on Kajli.
Kajli is brought to his accommodation, where she is completely taken aback by his treatment. He treats her with immense respect, calling her ‘Beti’ (daughter), an experience entirely new to her. The transition is difficult; in one instance, Dr. Gill severely reprimands her for smoking, leaving her confused about his conflicting behavior buying her freedom yet controlling her actions.
Conflicted, Kajli expresses a desire to return to the only life she has ever known. Dr. Gill assures her she will now live a respectable life under his care. However, it is only after he himself visits her former, miserable dwelling that Kajli finally understands the depth of his intentions and the grim reality of the life she was escaping. She changes her mind and willingly accepts his guardianship, marking a hopeful, redemptive end to their journey.
Soulful Music
The film’s timeless soundtrack, composed by Madan Mohan and with lyrics by Gulzar, is considered one of its major strengths. The soulful melodies perfectly complement the film’s mood. Popular songs include:“Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wohi” (Sung by Bhupinder and Lata Mangeshkar), “Ruke Ruke Se Kadam Ruk Ke Bar Bar”, (Sung by Lata Mangeshkar), “Chadi Re Chadi Kaise Gale Mein Padi”, (Sung by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar).

It’s a film directed by Gulzar with different subject. Music by Madhan Mohan superb. Performances by Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore extremely good. Remembering my childhood days. I was always listening to ‘Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wohi’ song. It will attract me to stop my action and pay attention to this soulful track sung by Latamangeshkar and Bhuender.
The review beautifully captures how Mausam (1975) uses the interplay of guilt and redemption to show that the past—and its emotional fallout—can never simply be left behind.
Nice. Thank You Uday.
A radical solution to social problem over the oppressive social norms.
Almost a remake of Ashok Kumar Suchitra Sen starter MAMTA.
SharMila in the freewheeling mode made most of her acting as her role gave scope for it. Sanjeev Kumar was passive in the guilt ridden role.
