The 1973 Telugu film Jeevana Tharangalu (Waves of Life) is a richly varied cinematic portrayal of family bonds, disputes, and redemption. Produced by D. Rama Naidu under the banner of Suresh Productions and directed by T. Rama Rao, the movie was based on a novel by the popular writer Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani.
Characters and Conflict
A key distinction of the film is its nuanced depiction of characters, where nearly every individual from the protagonists to supporting roles is shown to be culpable of a major or minor mistake. The story centers on Venugopala Rao (Gummadi), a wealthy businessman. Unavoidable circumstances led him to take a second wife, which prompted his first wife, Sriranjani, to leave. She raises her children, Roja (Vanisri, also known as Saroja) and Chandu (Krishnam Raju), independently by facing hardships.
Flawed Family Members

Roja’s brother, Chandu, turns to crime and attempts to steal jewelry from Venugopala Rao, unaware he is targeting his own father. Chandu changed his name as James and joined in a gang. Venugopala Rao’s arrogant daughter from his second marriage, Lavanya (Lakshmi), causes her father considerable pain. She even instigates a man named Chandu (James) to steal her father’s Veelunaama (Will).
The hero, Vijay (Sobhan Babu), is misconstrued that Roja trapped his brother in love trap and forcible marrying Roja without her consent. Roja wrote a letter to Ananth that he was alike her brother Chandu.
The Turning Point and Resolution

The narrative features several interesting twists and turns, culminating when Vijay, having repented his actions toward Roja, dedicates himself to resolving the complex issues plaguing both his and Venugopala Rao’s families. He changed the life of Chandu with the help of police official, who acted by the produced D Rama Naidu. The director masterfully weaves through the various conflicts and ultimately provides solutions for the diverse problems faced by each character.
The film’s soundtrack, composed by J. V. Raghavulu, was hugely successful. Notable hit songs included: Eee Jeevana Tharangalalo, Udatha Udatha Ooch, Puttinaroju Pandage Andariki, Eee Andaniki Bandham Vesano Eenado. The legendary Ghantasala lent his voice to three songs in the film, further contributing to its popularity. Jeevana Tharangalu is remembered as a memorable family drama for its deep dive into human flaws and its ultimate message of forgiveness and reconciliation.
