Gol Maal, a timeless Hindi comedy and family entertainer, is a landmark film in Indian cinema. Produced by N. C. Sippy and masterfully directed by the renowned Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the movie is celebrated for its clean humor, simple yet brilliant screenplay, and unforgettable performances.
Cast and Crew
The film stars Amol Palekar in the dual role of Ram Prasad and Laxman Prasad, alongside the inimitable Utpal Dutt as Bhavani Shankar, the eccentric industrialist. The main cast also features Bindiya Goswami as Urmila. A strong lineup of supporting actors includes Deven Varma, David, Omprakash, Keshto Mukherjee, and Dina Pathak. The film’s soul is its music, with poetic lyrics by Gulzar and memorable compositions by the legendary R. D. Burman.
Story Summary
The story centers on Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar), a recent graduate seeking employment. His neighbor and well-wisher, David, recommends him to his friend, Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), who owns an industrial unit.
Bhavani Shankar is a man of strict, traditional principles. He detests the “modern” generation and, most crucially, believes a mustache is a symbol of male pride and a necessary feature for any respectable man.
To secure the job, Ram Prasad takes David’s advice and seeks the help of his friend, actor Deven Varma. Deven Varma’s makeup man provides Ram Prasad with a removable mustache and the look of a traditional, studious young man. Impressed by the mustache and Ram Prasad’s suitably old-fashioned, single-minded focus on his studies, Bhavani Shankar hires him instantly with a comfortable salary.

The Double Trouble
The complication begins when Bhavani Shankar, a football enthusiast, attends a match and spots Ram Prasad in the crowd clean-shaven and wildly cheering with his friends. The next day, when questioned about his absence from the office, the quick-witted Ram Prasad concocts a brilliant lie: it wasn’t him, but his nonchalant twin brother, Laxman Prasad, who is irresponsible and passionate about music.
The lie spirals out of control when Bhavani Shankar, believing the musical twin exists, insists that Laxman Prasad be hired to teach music to his daughter, Urmila (Bindiya Goswami). Ram Prasad is now forced to juggle two distinct identities—the serious, traditional Ram Prasad for the office, and the artistic, carefree Laxman Prasad for the music lessons.
The Ailing Mother
The deception deepens when Bhavani Shankar expresses a desire to visit Ram Prasad’s home to see his “ailing mother.” Since Ram Prasad does not have an ailing mother, he again turns to Deven Varma, who arranges for an actress (Dina Pathak) to impersonate his mother. Bhavani Shankar’s visit goes smoothly, and he is thoroughly impressed by their hospitality.
In the end, however, the web of lies unravels, and Bhavani Shankar discovers that Ram Prasad and Laxman Prasad are one and the same. Outraged, he rushes to the police station to file a cheating complaint. It is only with the timely intervention of his friend David, who smooths over the situation, that the film reaches its entertaining, heartwarming conclusion.
A Cinematic Success
Gol Maal is a fantastic entertainer that delivers great comedy through brilliant situational humor and witty dialogue. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s direction is impeccable, keeping the narrative tight and the humor subtle. The film’s music remains iconic, particularly the super hit song “Aane Wala Pal Janewala Hai,” sung by Kishore Kumar, which perfectly captures the film’s gentle, nostalgic mood. The film was a super hit and is regarded as a comedy classic for its wholesome entertainment value.
