Despite Tough Three-Way Race with TVK and AIADMK
The entry of Vijay into the political arena has transformed the election into a “triangle” contest. Based on feedback gathered by The Prime Post from various citizens, the DMK-led government appears likely to retain power with a simple majority. However, the party still faces certain disadvantages.
The Dominance of Regional Identity
National parties like the Congress and the BJP maintain a relatively small presence in the state because of the deep-seated “Dravidian sentiment” and strong regional pride among the people. The political battle is currently revolving around three primary figures: M.K. Stalin of the DMK-Congress alliance, Edappodi K. Palaniswami leading the AIADMK-BJP front, and the popular actor Vijay, known as “Thalapathy,” who heads the new Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.
The Rise of the Triangle Contest

For instance, Ramachandran, a Siddha medicine doctor in Madurai, believes that while Vijay’s party might win a few seats and cause confusion, it is not yet strong enough to form a government on its own. He also noted that while Palaniswami is a well-liked leader, internal divisions within the AIADMK remain a major obstacle for him.
Corruption versus Welfare Schemes
The debate over corruption is a central theme, but its impact varies among different groups of voters. Raghu, a software engineer in Chennai, explained that while the educated class frequently discusses the rampant corruption in the DMK government, poor voters are more focused on the direct benefits they receive. He pointed out that M.K. Stalin’s decision to continue the welfare schemes introduced by the late leader Jayalalithaa has been viewed as a positive and respectful gesture by the less fortunate, helping to maintain his support.
The Potential Kingmaker Role

Some voters believe that the new TVK party will play a decisive role in the final outcome. N. Prabhakaran, a shopkeeper in Tirunelveli, suggested that Vijay’s elected members may act as “kingmakers,” ultimately deciding who becomes the next Chief Minister even if the party does not win a majority. He also mentioned that public awareness regarding the alleged looting of natural resources by current ministers could hurt the DMK’s standing. Meanwhile, the Congress party is focusing its efforts on criticizing the national failures of the NDA government regarding fuel prices and international conflicts.
A different Election Landscape
The upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu have become a significant challenge for both political parties and expert analysts to predict. A major factor in this uncertainty is the large group of neutral voters, estimated at around 25 percent, who remain undecided about which candidate to support. This confusion has made the final outcome of the race difficult to track.
Shifting Loyalties and New Leadership
Personal reputation and organizational strength also play massive roles in the voters’ minds. T. Nirmala, an engineer in Thoothukudi, admitted she initially planned to vote for Vijay because she is a devoted fan, but she changed her mind due to personal controversies surrounding him. On the other hand, P. Raghavan, a hotel owner in Srirangam, noted that the DMK’s strong organization and financial resources give it a clear advantage. He observed that the era of legendary leaders like MGR, Karunanidhi, and Jayalalithaa has passed, leaving newer leaders like Palaniswami and Vijay with the difficult task of proving their leadership skills to the public.
