The recent three-phase Gram Panchayat elections in Telangana have concluded with the ruling Congress party emerging as the largest winner. Out of the 12,733 panchayats that went to the polls, Congress-backed candidates secured over 7,010 seats, establishing a clear lead across the state. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) followed with 3,502 seats, while the BJP made its presence felt by winning approximately 688 seats. Independent candidates and others accounted for 1,505 victories.

Congress Wins Big
TPCC President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud claimed the election results reflect a “public endorsement” of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s governance. Following the third phase on December 17, 2025, Goud stated that the victory symbolises a mandate for “Welfare, Social Justice and Development” and noted significant support from minorities, Dalits, and women.
Analysis of the Results
Statistically, Congress-supported candidates won 55.53% of the total seats. While the party leadership expressed satisfaction with this majority, political analysts suggest the results are a mixed bag. Historically, in local body elections, the ruling party in the state tends to sweep the polls with a much higher margin often exceeding 60% as voters generally prefer to align with the government in power for smoother local development.
The fact that the Congress fell short of this 60% benchmark suggests a degree of public dissatisfaction. Despite being in power, the party’s inability to capture a more dominant share of the rural vote indicates that some segments of the electorate may be unhappy with the current administration’s performance.
BRS Gains Momentum
The BRS, which many expected would struggle following its loss in the Assembly elections, performed better than anticipated by winning 27.50% of the seats. This performance has sparked celebrations within the party ranks. BRS Working PresidentK.T. Rama Rao (KTR) hailed the results as a sign of the Congress party’s “beginning of the end” in Telangana.

Opposition Criticism
KTR launched a scathing attack on the state government, stating that the people have taught the Congress a lesson for failing to fulfill its promises. He criticized the ruling party for allegedly deceiving the public with its “Six Guarantees” and numerous other electoral vows. According to KTR, the Congress came to power by misleading the citizens, and the panchayat results reflect the rural population’s growing frustration. He predicted that this downward trend for the Congress would continue in all future elections.
