The central theme of Chupke Chupke, 1975 Hindi comedy, family entertainer revolves around a playful battle of wits and a harmless, elaborate prank executed by a husband (Dharmendra) to playfully challenge the ego and intelligence of his respected, all-knowing brother-in-law (Om Prakash). The film’s humor stems from the escalating confusion caused by this meticulously planned charade, proving that genuine love and intelligence can find joy in a little, high-class deception.
The Story of the Prank
Prof. Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra), a botany professor, meets and secretly marries Sulekha (Sharmila Tagore) during a college excursion. The trouble begins when Sulekha constantly praises her brother-in-law, Raghavendra Kumar (Om Prakash), affectionately called “Jijaji,” as the smartest man she knows. Feeling playfully challenged by this unwavering admiration, Parimal hatches a plan to confuse his Jijaji and test his acclaimed intelligence.

Professor acts as Driver
Parimal’s plan is to impersonate a sophisticated driver named ‘Pyare Mohan Ilahabadi,’ whom Jijaji requires. Parimal changes his look and approaches Jijaji, presenting himself as a driver who speaks flawless, pure Hindi like a scholar. This immediate contrast a high-class, articulate man performing a simple job baffles Jijaji, who repeatedly doubts whether his new driver is truly a professional or a professor. Sulekha supports her husband by pretending not to know ‘Pyare Mohan,’ delighting in Jijaji’s confusion.
The Escalation of Confusion
To intensify the prank, Parimal brings his literature professor friend, Sukumar Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), into the scheme. Sukumar pretends to be the real Prof. Parimal Tripathi, the husband Sulekha spoke of. He is joined by his real-life wife Vasudha (Jaya Bachchan), who poses as the fake Parimal’s shy spouse.
The resulting situation is a comedic masterpiece
Dharmendra is the refined driver Pyare Mohan. Amitabh Bachchan is the fake, dramatically exaggerated professor Parimal Tripathi. Om Prakash (Jijaji) is trapped in a web of contradictory identities. Who is the real Parimal? Why is the driver a scholar? Why is everyone behaving so strangely?
The Happy Resolution
The massive confusion created by the fake identities and scholarly driver culminates in Sulekha finally revealing the entire prank to Jijaji. Though initially shocked, Jijaji bursts into laughter, but appreciating Parimal’s cleverness and resourcefulness. He happily blesses the couple. The film concludes on a joyful note as Sukumar (Amitabh Bachchan) and Vasudha (Jaya Bachchan) are also united.
Musical and Critical Success
Star Cast: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Om Prakash delivered memorable, charismatic performances. The film featured hit songs composed by the legendary S. D. Burman, including “Sa Re Gana” (Rafi and Kishore Kumar), “Chupke Chupke Chal Re Puruvayya” (Latamangeshkar), and “Baaghon Mein” (Mukesh and Latamangeshkar). The film’s success is also attributed to the masterful direction of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, which ensured it became a super hit and remains a beloved classic of Indian cinema.

My all-time favorite movie! Ever refreshing and my must-go-to movie! Dharmendra’s “jijja ji” has become the expression of the movie. The simple yet brilliant Hrishikesh Mukherjee! Beautiful screenplay and real characters! Of course, you cannot forget about Om Prakash ji.
Well Said. Thank You Bindu.
Greatness usually lies in simplicity and daring audacity. The simple love story evolves into a planned prank to the delight of the viewers. An English professor tries to teach botany, botany professor becomes a chauffeur etc. leading a laughter riot.
Beautiful songs and dialogues lead to delightful climax.
One wonders if the title is chupke chupke or chchupke chchupke.
