Stiry Summary: A Case of Mistaken Identity
The story revolves around a village family, headed by Pitamber Chaudhary (A. K. Hangal), who receives a letter informing them that a prospective groom for their daughter, Geeta (Zarina Wahab), an officer named Vijayendra, will soon be arriving for an official visit. The family is instructed to offer him excellent hospitality, accommodation, and food.
However, a case of mistaken identity begins when Amol Palekar arrives in the village for work from the same department. Pitamber and his family mistakenly believe Palekar is the high-ranking officer, Vijayendra, and shower him with extraordinary affection and a grand reception. Surprised by the overwhelming warmth, Palekar’s character, Vinod, is drawn to the family’s genuine nature.
The family, seeing Vinod as a perfect match, actively encourages the shy Geeta to spend time with him, and soon the two fell deeply in love. The true identity crisis occurs when the actual officer, Vijayendra (Vijayendra Ghatge), finally arrives. Upon realizing their mistake, Pitamber’s family particularly A. K. Hangal’s character—immediately drops Vinod, ignoring him entirely and diverting all their attention to the real, high-status Vijayendra, who also happens to be Vinod’s boss. Hurt and confused by the sudden change in their behavior, Vinod decides to leave the village and quit his job. Distraught, Geeta rushes to the railway station to see him off. In a heartwarming climax, Vijayendra, having witnessed the genuine love between the two, takes Geeta to Vinod, ultimately reconciling the young lovers.
Cinematic Legacy and Music
Basu Chatterjee’s excellent direction and the stellar performances by the entire cast including Amol Palekar’s portrayal of the endearing common man and Zarina Wahab’s innocent charm made Chitchor a super hit. The film is particularly celebrated for its unforgettable soundtrack, composed by Ravindra Jain. The soulful melodies are timeless, with all the songs beautifully rendered by K. J. Yesudas. The most iconic track, a super hit that remains popular even today, is:
Gori Tera Gaon Bada Pyara, Main Toh Gaya Mara” (O, Girl, your village is so lovely, I have fallen for it.) and, Aaj Se Pahale Aaj Se Jyada Khushi Aajthak nahi milee’ (This joy never I had before) are lovely one. Yesudas won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for this very song in 1976, solidifying the film’s status as a musical gem.

One of my favourite movie.I like the courage of Geeta in the movie and innocence of Vinod.The picture is a smooth love story picturized so neatly.The small boy also looks so cute.The treatment in villages is very well portrayed in movie.Songs are unique

It was the era of the eligible bachelor next door with a smiling Amol Palekar at the peak.
But the change to rural setting was the icing on the cake. Superb songs and sceneries kept the movie going.
Climax provided was charming.

Yesudas deserved the award. His rendition of ‘Jab deep jale aana’ is just something else. An interesting fact, this movie was deliberately released in a single theatre and still went onto becoming a superhit. Much later in multiple prints , such was the confidence in the product.
