The Telangana government is working on establishing the nation’s first Earth Science University (Manmohan Singh Earth Science University) in Kothagudem. The university is planned to be built on approximately 300 acres. Currently, the government is focusing on designing the university buildings and securing funds. They are preparing a plan to design the models with top Indian architects and construct the university to international standards. Next week, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will make the final decision on the university’s construction model and funding.
A Milestone in the History of Indian Education
As part of the initiative, the state’s Agriculture Minister, Tummala Nageswara Rao, met with the Earth Science University Vice-Chancellor and Education Secretary Yogita Rana in Hyderabad on Wednesday. He directed officials to prepare the architect’s design and cost estimates within the next week. The Minister discussed the university’s construction and provided necessary suggestions. On this occasion, Minister Tummala stated that the government’s decision to convert the existing mining college in Kothagudem into an Earth Science University will be a milestone in the history of the country’s education sector.
Tummala mentioned that this is not only the first Earth Science University in India but also the second in the world. He expressed happiness that the prestigious university is being named after former Prime Minister and economist Dr. Manmohan Singh. The Minister directed officials to design the university with modern infrastructure, keeping in mind the needs of future generations. He emphasized the construction of classrooms, hostels, libraries, and laboratories to facilitate comfortable learning for students and faculty.
Project Construction with CSR Funds
Tummala Nageswara Rao informed that discussions have already been held with representatives from NMDC, Singareni, and Coal India to mobilize the significant funds required for the Earth Science University’s construction. Efforts are underway to secure funds for the university through CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) funding. Tummala stated that this Earth Science University, to be built on 300 acres in Kothagudem, will mark a new direction in the fields of education and employment. He mentioned that “This university will take Telangana’s education sector to the global level. Thousands of young scientists will emerge from here. This will be a matter of pride for Telangana,” the Minister opined.
Ph.D. Courses from Next Year

The Minister stated that Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses are currently running at the existing mining university. In line with the government’s decision to start Ph.D. courses from the next academic year, he directed officials to hold discussions with the University Grants Commission (UGC) and obtain the necessary permissions. Tummala expressed hope that “Future geoscientists, mineral experts, and environmental scientists from this university will play a key role in nation-building.”
