- Exploring the direction and writing style that defined the film
- Analyzing its global commercial success and record-breaking runtime
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal is a 2023 Hindi-language action drama that stands as one of the most polarizing and commercially successful films in modern Indian cinema. The narrative explores the dark, hyper-violent depths of a father-son relationship, weaving a tale of obsessive love, betrayal, and the cyclical nature of revenge. Released on December 1st, 2023, the film quickly became a global box-office juggernaut, noted for its staggering runtime of approximately 3 hours and 24 minutes.
Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of the volatile lead protagonist.

The heart of the story lies in the psychological transformation of Ranvijay “Animal” Singh, portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor. Growing up in the shadow of his powerful but emotionally distant father, Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor), Ranvijay develops deep-seated emotional scars. When an assassination attempt is made on Balbir, Ranvijay returns from abroad, abandoning all moral constraints to protect his family. His journey illustrates a descent into primal ruthlessness, effectively showing how trauma and toxic devotion can turn a man into the “animal” his nickname suggests.
Bobby Deol’s viral impact as Abrar Haque
The film’s impact was bolstered by a powerhouse ensemble cast. While Ranbir Kapoor delivered a career-defining performance as the volatile protagonist, Rashmika Mandanna provided the emotional grounding as Geetanjali, Ranvijay’s wife. Tripti Dimri played a pivotal supporting role as Zoya, adding a layer of complexity to the plot’s themes of betrayal. However, it was Bobby Deol’s portrayal of the antagonist, Abrar Haque, that became a cultural phenomenon. Despite having no dialogue and limited screen time, Deol’s menacing presence and his viral entry scene made him a standout element of the film.
Chart-Topping Soundtracks

Music played a fundamental role in the movie’s identity, featuring a diverse soundtrack composed by artists like Pritam and Vishal Mishra. The album produced several hits, including the romantic “Hua Main,” the melancholic “Satranga,” and the father-centric “Papa Meri Jaan.” The high-energy track “Arjan Vailly” became synonymous with the film’s brutal action sequences. Notably, the Iranian folk-inspired song “Jamal Kudu” (used for Abrar’s entry) and an instrumental rendition of A.R. Rahman’s “Chhoti Si Asha” became massive social media trends, further cementing the film’s place in the cultural zeitgeist.
Themes and Critical Reception
Ultimately, Animal is a cinematic exploration of the extremes of human emotion and violence. “Despite critical debate over its depiction of toxic masculinity and bloodshed, its massive global success confirmed its resonance with a wide audience.” It remains a landmark film for its bold storytelling, technical scale, and the sheer intensity of its central performances.

Regarding casting Ranbir Kapoor, Kashmira, Tripti n Bobby Deol handled their roles excellently.
Merits of the movie is Ranbir Kapoor a lover boy seen as rough character, Bobby Deol as a villain, Tripti as glamorous, Rashmika as a housewife and Anil Kapoor in a Father’s role.
Picturization is superb. Though it’s lengthy it won’t matters.
Direction values are very high.
Bobby Deol played a prominent role and he is apt for the character. It’s his re birth (second innings) in to films.
