“Aap Ki Kasam” is a popular 1974 romantic drama that explores the devastating consequences of misplaced suspicion in a marriage. Produced and directed by J. Om Prakash, the film stars the iconic pair Rajesh Khanna as Kamal Bhatnagar and Mumtaz as Sunita Bhatnagar, alongside a strong supporting cast including Sanjeev Kumar as Mohan and Rehman as Sunita’s father. A. K. Hangal and Asrani also appear in key supporting roles.
Design of the film Summary
The story centers on Kamal (Rajesh Khanna), a loving husband whose life is consumed by jealousy. His wife, Sunita (Mumtaz), shares an innocent, mutual interest in music with his friend, Mohan (Sanjeev Kumar). Their shared passion leads them to spend time together, a closeness that Kamal misinterprets. His intense suspicion and jealousy create an unbearable strain on their marriage, ultimately leading to a painful separation. Years later, Kamal realizes the grave mistake he made, but it’s too late. Sunita, having separated from Kamal and facing health concerns, was persuaded by her parents to remarry. Kamal, now a lonely and repentant beggar, wanders the streets, plagued by his past actions.

The film’s emotional climax occurs when Kamal, among a crowd of beggars, gathers for a wedding food offering. Sunita’s father, recognizing the downtrodden man, reveals to his granddaughter that Kamal is her biological father. The beggar is at his own daughter’s wedding a deeply moving and ironic moment that concludes the film.
Musical and Cultural Impact
The film’s powerful narrative is enhanced by R. D. Burman’s soulful musical score, which was a major contributor to its success. The soundtrack, featuring the voices of legendary singers Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, was a super hit. Iconic songs like “Karvate badalte rahe saari raat hum,” “Suno Kaho Kaha Suna,” and “Zindagi Ke Safar Mein Guzar Jaate Hai Jo Makaam” remain classics of Hindi cinema.
Aap Ki Kasam” is celebrated not only for its memorable music but also for the powerful, moving performances delivered by its leads, Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. It stands as a timeless exploration of trust, regret, and the fragility of relationships.

Kaka Super hit film. It conveys how small misunderstanding will spoil lives. Superb performances by Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) and Mumtaz. Soulful Music by R. D. Burman. Every Department did excellent job. Flawless.
It is no less a musical hit. Jai Jai shiva Shankar, the title song etc were all unforgettable. The story and landscapes were all scenic. It’s disappointing the hero pays penalty for his own mistake in the climax. I liked the movie very well.
‘Zindagi ke safar me’ is one of Kishore Kumar best. No other singer of his time could have sang it better. A bitter but realistic ending which showed real life is not a fairytale where you get second chances for your mistakes. Nice movie.
Nice. Thank You.
Ap ki kasam is one of my favourite movies. Great musical hit. Rajeshkanna action super. The film is a remake of the Malayalam film Vaazhve Mayam -1970. Of course slight change in ending.
Later remade in Telugu also as Edadugula Bandham.
Your review is excellent and will made younger generations to see old movies.
Thank You Sir.
Nice review
Timeless melodies and apt lyrics.
But any story on shifting psychology, from love to lust to schizophrenia or depression carries no interest.
Only Rajesh Khanna’s name carried it off with good performance by Mumtaz and Sanjeev Kumar added on for the box office.
