Many TDP leaders did not campaign or work for the BJP candidate’s victory
A High-Stakes and Surprising Civic Battle
The recent municipal corporation elections in Andhra Pradesh delivered a decisive mandate across urban local bodies, with the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA alliance sweeping nearly all major corporations—including Vijayawada, Vizag, Guntur, Kurnool, Kadapa, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Eluru, and Ongole. However, the Anantapur Municipal Corporation emerged as a notable exception, where YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) candidate B.C. Ramesh Goud clinched the mayoral seat in a closely contested battle against the BJP’s candidate. Although candidates from the ruling NDA alliance secured a strong majority of 37 divisions—comprising 30 seats for TDP, 6 for Jana Sena Party, and 1 for the BJP—this advantage did not translate into victory for the mayoral post. Political analysts attribute this divergence to significant cross-voting, as a notable section of TDP voters reportedly cast their ballots in favour of the YSRCP candidate due to localized factionalism and dissatisfaction over seat-sharing arrangements. It is understood that key ruling party leaders have not extended cooperation to the BJP.
Role of Election Machinery and Opposition Allegations
The overall municipal campaign was marked by sharp political friction over the conduct of the polling apparatus. Mainstream opposition voices, including YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, alleged significant administrative bias, claiming that police presence and polling officials were deployed aggressively to favor the ruling coalition. Opposition leaders pointed to instances of official interference, intimidation of cadre, and procedural discrepancies in several wards across the state. Critics argued that the election machinery functioned more like an extension of state executive power rather than an impartial referee, creating an uphill battle for opposition candidates.
Anantapur Diverged from the Trend
Despite these external challenges and the ruling alliance’s extensive ground push, Anantapur resisted the statewide trend due to a mix of localized political factors.Unlike other urban bodies where opposition forces struggled to mobilize, the local YSRCP leadership in Anantapur under former MLA Anantha Venkatarami Reddy executed a structured campaign. By backing a candidate like Ramesh Goud with strong community ties, the party consolidated its core voter base effectively. Under the ruling alliance’s seat-sharing agreement, the Anantapur mayoral nomination was allocated to the BJP rather than the TDP. This created local friction and fragmented the vote base, allowing YSRCP to capitalize on municipal-level anti-incumbency.
In key wards across Anantapur, opposition polling agents maintained a strong presence inside voting booths and counting centers, ensuring strict supervision over the counting process and mitigating potential administrative overreach. The civic election outcomes underscore the influence of state administration and police power during local body polls. However, Anantapur demonstrates that focused local organization, smart candidate choices, and vigilant booth management can counter broader political momentum.
YSRCP’s Notable Victories in the Andhra Pradesh Civic Polls
In the November 2026 Andhra Pradesh urban local body elections, the ruling TDP-led NDA coalition achieved a near-total sweep across the state. However, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) managed to secure victories in select pockets, highlighted by strong localized leadership and strategic ground management.
The Standout Victory in Nandikotkur

The most prominent triumph for YSRCP came in the Nandikotkur Municipality. Under the active leadership and aggressive campaign management of YSRCP youth leader Byreddy Siddharth Reddy, the party pulled off a sensational victory against the combined push of the ruling coalition. Out of the 32 municipal wards, YSRCP captured 23 wards, restricting the TDP to just 9 seats, while JSP and BJP failed to open their account. Sidharth Reddy’s continuous ground presence, youth outreach, and tactical coordination enabled YSRCP candidate Fatima Bee to win the chairperson post convincingly.
Victories in Bethamcherla and Naidupeta –YSRCP also secured wins in Bethamcherla Nagar Panchayat in Nandyal district and Naidupeta Municipality in Tirupati district, securing the chairperson positions despite facing tough opposition momentum. Electoral Outcome in Venkatagiri– – In the Venkatagiri Municipality, the TDP-led alliance won a clear majority, securing 29 out of the total 36 wards, while YSRCP was limited to 4 ward victories.
