Forum for Constitutional Democracy Condemns Delhi Police Action
Calls for Action to Protect Democratic Rights
HYDERABAD — The Forum for Constitutional Democracy (FCD) strongly condemned the action of Delhi Police and security forces for the alleged high-handedness, forcible removal, and detention of peaceful protesters, women activists, and journalists in the national capital. At a high-level meeting convened on Monday, October 12, 2026, civil society leaders, legal experts, media personnel, and former public servants expressed grave concern over the growing restrictions on fundamental rights, citing the police actions as a serious assault on democratic freedoms.
Alleged Violations Following Supreme Court Directions
The meeting highlighted that despite explicit directives issued by the Supreme Court around 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 11, 2026—ordering authorities to ensure peaceful protesters were not illegally detained and that the movement of citizens, journalists, and lawyers remained unobstructed—reports emerged by 5:00 PM the same day showing forcible removals and detentions. Speakers at the forum emphasized that these actions directly raise critical questions regarding police compliance with judicial orders and warrant strict judicial scrutiny.
Discussions and Planned Initiatives
The forum outlined several key civil liberties issues and strategic initiatives aimed at safeguarding constitutional guarantees. Documentation of Rights Violations: The meeting noted a proposal by Mallepally Lakshmaiah to document systemic violations of constitutional norms and democratic rights over the past 12 years, gather evidence, and present the findings to the public domain. Electoral Roll Revision Concerns: Participants raised serious concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and potential threats to voting rights.
Youth Engagement
The FCD stressed the importance of actively engaging with young people taking to the streets, listening to their demands, and building solidarity with their efforts to protect democratic participation. Broad Democratic Platform: The meeting discussed bringing together civil society organizations, students, intellectuals, omen’s groups, trade unions, journalists, and educators to form an independent platform dedicated to protecting constitutional values.
