NDA Emerges Single Largest Party in Thiruvananthapuram
The capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, has seen a huge political change. In the recent local body elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has scored a major and historic win in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. This win is significant because it has ended the long-standing rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), which had control over this important civic body for more than four decades about 45 years.
Big Victory for NDA
The results, declared on Saturday, showed that the NDA emerged as the single largest party, making a strong statement in Kerala’s politics. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has a total of 101 wards. Out of these, the NDA won 50 wards, coming very close to the majority mark needed to take power. The ruling LDF suffered a big setback and was reduced to just 29 seats. This poor performance is a major concern for the LDF, especially in the state capital, which is a major urban area.

UDF’s Performance
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) managed to secure 19 seats. This shows a slight improvement for the UDF compared to its previous performance in the Corporation elections, where its tally had dropped in the past. This time, the UDF managed to stop the continuous decline. Two seats went to Independent candidates. Polling in one ward had to be cancelled because a candidate passed away last week.
A Shift in Urban Politics
This win in Thiruvananthapuram is being seen as the biggest achievement for the BJP in Kerala. This victory signals a major change in how people in the state’s capital are thinking about politics. For a long time, the political fight in Kerala was mainly between the LDF and the UDF. Now, the NDA has successfully broken this two-party system in the capital. The BJP had been steadily improving its performance here over the last few elections, and this time, they finally clinched the victory.

Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha, called the NDA’s win a “historic performance” and a “notable shift in the capital’s political landscape.” This shows how big this result is for the state.
What This Means for the Future
The loss in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is a big shock for the LDF government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Even though the LDF might have done well in some other parts of the local body polls, losing the capital city’s main body is a worrying sign, especially with the Assembly elections coming next year.

For the NDA, this win is a huge confidence booster. They ran a strong campaign focusing on development and promising a corruption-free civic body. This result suggests that their efforts to promote ‘Vikasita Keralam’ (developed Kerala) have found support among the urban voters. The stage is now set for a more intense political battle in the upcoming state elections.
